606 Glass System (Beta)
An idea came to mind: could a Vitsoe 606 shelf be adapted to a glass cabinet with the addition of a few components? – the intention being to keep dust and UV off precious books, objects, artwork etc.
A prototype (pictured here) was constructed and further refined over multiple iterations. This has evolved into a beta offer which is available to order.
System Description
With this accessory system, glass panels can be added between two Vitsoe 606 shelves to create a protective enclosure around items on the lower shelf.
The two side glass panels are fixed in place, whilst the two front panels slide to enable access.
Nylon parts are adhered to the glass with high-strength tape (3M VHB), with the extra security of a C-clip.
The Nylon parts are universal between different cabinet sizes. The only variable is the glass panel sizing.
This system is in no way endorsed by Vitsoe or Dieter Rams (in past or present). It is merely an effort to offer the functional benefits of an independent research project to a wider audience.
Specification and procurement process
- The user decides which of their existing 606 shelves they would like to apply the glass system to. The glass system works between two stacked shelves (as pictured here), within reasonable size limits.
- The appropriate number of Nylon component sets are purchased. There are Side Panel sets and Sliding Door sets.
- The customer procures the glass panels from a local or online glass retailer, to the sizes advised. Advice is provided on sizing and other glass properties.
- The customer applies the Nylon components to the glass according to instructions, then fits the panels to their shelves.
Why ‘Beta’?
The Glass System is an early product release that has undergone alpha testing in-house and is considered ‘more or less’ complete, however, design changes may occur as a result of testing and user feedback.
It has not been tested over thousands of open / close cycles and it has not been tested for all the possible size variations.
Potential customers are encouraged to assess the system fully before deciding to place an order. A detailed planning PDF is available on request.
Beta programme orders
Early orders for the system will be subject to review - with the proposed installation (panel sizes and quantity) assessed in advance of ordering, and follow-up feedback sought.
Early orders will priced at a reduced rate to reflect the developmental status of the system.
Please make contact to enquire about an order.
Advisory
Installation of this system is relatively straightforward if the instructions are followed methodically and carefully. However, not everyone is confident with ‘hands on’ assembly, or capable of following instructions precisely. If you fall into this category, it is recommended to find competent assistance or reconsider investing in the system.
