606 Glass System (beta)

The inimitable Vitsoe 606 shelving system is an enduring masterwork of rational design.

The 606 Glass System shown here is an accessory kit which offers extra protection for precious items such as artwork, collectables and books.

Dust, UV light and wandering fingers are kept at bay by 4mm glass panels which fix between two shelves: creating a glass cabinet or vitrine with sliding doors, discreetly integrated to the front lip of the shelves (without any damage to the shelves).

The prototype pictured here has been refined over multiple iterations and evolved into a beta offer which is available to order.

The offer is a kit of Nylon parts which combine with rectanguler glass panels purchased separately by the customer.

We supply the Nylon parts, the customer sources the glass from a local or online retailer.
More info below and in the planning guide.

System Description

With this accessory system, glass panels can be added between two Vitsoe 606* shelves to create a protective enclosure around items on the lower shelf.

The two side glass panels are fixed in place, whilst the two front panels slide to enable access.

Nylon parts are the basis of the system. These parts are:

  • adhered to the glass with high-strength tape and a C-clip for extra security.
  • universal between different cabinet sizes. The only variable is the glass panel sizing.
  • made from PA12 Nylon (printed) with a deep-dye black colour and Polyshot surface finish (aka glass bead shot-peened).
  • biocompatible - meeting USP class I-VI and US FDA guidlines for intact skin surface devices.

*This system is in no way endorsed by Vitsoe or Dieter Rams (in past or present). It is merely an effort to offer the functional benefits of an independent research project to a wider audience.

Specification and buying process

  1. Decide which of your existing 606 shelves you would like to apply the glass system to. The glass system works between two stacked shelves with upward-facing sides (as pictured here), within reasonable size limits (as defined in the planning guide).

  2. Order the appropriate Nylon component sets from this site.

  3. Order the necessary glass panels from a local or online glass retailer. Advice is provided on sizing and other glass properties.

  4. Apply the Nylon components to the glass according to instructions, then fit the panels to your shelves.

Why ‘beta’?

The Glass System is an early product release that has undergone alpha testing in-house and is considered ‘more or less’ complete, however, design changes may occur as a result of testing and user feedback.

It has not been tested over thousands of open / close cycles and it has not been tested for all the possible size variations (but detailed modelling has been undertaken).

Potential customers are encouraged to assess the system fully before deciding to place an order. A detailed planning PDF is available to download in the Shop.

Beta programme orders

Purchases made now will be manufactured to order. As such the dispatch time could be up to 10 working days from checkout.

Please send an email enquiry before ordering. This is not necessary but advised so that we can understand the intended application.

Advisory

Installation of this system is relatively straightforward if the instructions are followed methodically. However, not everyone is confident with ‘hands on’ assembly, or capable of following instructions precisely. If you fall into this category, it is recommended to find competent assistance or reconsider investing in the system.
